Sarma is a traditional dish that is popular in many Balkan countries, including Serbia. This delicious dish is made from sauerkraut and minced meat, seasoned in a special way to make it an unforgettable experience for all the senses. Sarma is usually prepared during the winter months and is an indispensable part of festive meals.
# Ingredients for sarma
– 1 head of sauerkraut
– 500 g of minced meat (pork or mixed)
– 1 large onion
– 1 cup of rice
– 2 spoons of oil
– 1 teaspoon of salt
– 1 teaspoon of pepper
– 1 spoon of allspice
– 2 bay leaves
– 200 g of smoked meat or sausage (optional)
# Preparation of sarma
1. **Preparation of cabbage leaves:** Carefully separate the sauerkraut leaves. If the leaves are too big, you can cut them in half.
2. **Preparation of the filling:** Fry the finely chopped onion in oil until it becomes glassy. Add minced meat and fry until it changes color. Then add rice, salt, pepper and allspice. Mix well and let it cool a little.
3. **Filling the leaves:** Put a spoonful of the prepared filling on each cabbage leaf. Roll the leaves into rolls, making sure to close the ends well so that the filling does not spill during cooking.
4. **Cooking:** Put a couple of cabbage leaves on the bottom of the pot, then arrange the cabbage leaves next to each other. Add smoked meat or sausages between the layers. Pour water so that they are covered. Add the bay leaf and cook on low heat for about 2 hours.
5. **Serving:** Sarma is most often served warm with a piece of bread or mashed potatoes.
